What is Osteogenesis Imperfecta?

O.I. means a life long liability to fracture due to imperfectly formed "brittle bones". A baby so affected can suffer broken bones if it merely cries, sneezes or is cuddled by a loving mother.

What causes Osteogenesis Imperfecta?

The disease is caused by a genetic disorder that affects collagen development. Collagen is a protein which gives bones its tensile strength. The genetic defects lead to insufficient production of collagen or production of faulty collagens in bone and other tissues. A deficiency or weakness in bone collagen leads to bone fragility.

Current Treatments for Osteogenesis Imperfecta

There is not yet a cure for OI. Treatment is directed toward preventing or controlling the symptoms, maximizing independent mobility, and developing optimal bone mass and muscle strength. Fractures are usually managed with minimal support, traction or light plaster cast.

What is being done to research Osteogenesis Imperfecta?

Research is being carried out into the many aspects of O.I. in Australia.

Projects have been funded into the causes of O.I. including direct study of the gene defects, the correlation between reduced bone density and fractures in O.I. persons and into methods for the prevention of fractures.

These projects could not have been continued without the support of voluntary societies such as OI Australia.
