Summary of PresentationsHealth Issues for Adults
with OI - Prof. David Sillence Prof Sillence spoke of the
range of OI Types, currently fourteen in
all;the various complications of OI and the effects
in adults; management of short-term and long-term
effects of OI; what can be cured and what needs to
be managed. Osteoporosis and its
Treatment in OI Adults - Assoc. Prof.
Michael Hooper Dr Hooper described the
meaning of osteoporosis and the use of the
'T-score' and 'Z-score' on tests. He outlined
possible causes for Osteoporosis as well as current
pharmaceutical treatments available to
patients. Transitional Care
Services Dr Holmes-Walker highlighted
the problems many young long-term young patients
with OI have upon reaching age 18, when they
are usually required to leave behind the familiar
paediatric medical system for the unfamiliar and
unknown adult medical system. Only recently have
medical professionals started to understand the
problems that young patients going through this
transitional phase of life have and assisting them
'transfer' successfully from one to the
other. Transitional Care
Project Ruth related her experiences
as a new worker in NSW Health regarding the youth
transitional care project. She highlighted the
limited knowledge that the average medical
professional has regarding the developmental issues
of young people as they transfer to an adult-care
model from a paediatric health-care model. She
concluded on questions to the attendees regarding
what issues or needs they have regarding this
transfer time. Osteoporosis - The Bone
and Mineral Decade Judy spoke of the projects of
Osteoporosis Australia www.osteoporosis.org.au
and their involvement with other health groups,
like Arthritis
Australia and bone
health groups. She described the process of getting
this condition on the agenda as a National health
issues, as well as support to the Bone and Mineral
Decade. October 20 - World
Osteoporosis Day Open Forum Dr Munns form the
Endocrinology department at Westmead Hospital
facilitated this discussion from attendees.
Transition Day at Luna
Park (Video) - Lynne spoke about the process
of transition as the purposeful, planned
movement of adolescents and young adults with
chronic physical and medical conditions from
child-centred to adult-orientated health care
systems. Young people with chronic health
conditions from paediatric to adult care is a
gradual process that needs to be better recognised,
and managed in a coordinated, integrated manner
with young people. She played an informative and
educational video Transition Day at Luna Park
taken at Luna Park, Sydney and their views on
their needs and issues. Transition Experience
- Renee Renee spoke about the
importance of parents starting to educate their
young people starting approx. 15-16 years old about
the process of their own health care after age 18
and into young adulthood and further. She recounted
a recent experience which required assistance of
her parents and helpful medical professionals to
enable her get the health care she
